Various Physical Therapy Techniques

You may have heard of physical therapy in the past, but you may not exactly know what it means or what it entails. Physical therapy is a form of treatment that involves the different phases of recuperation such as treatment, healing process, injury and disability prevention, as well as function and movement restoration. The American Physical Therapy Association clearly describes the scope of physical therapy as:

* Evaluation of individuals with impairment, limited functioning, and disability to be able to establish a diagnosis, intervention and prognosis

* Alleviation of impairment and functional limitation by creating, implementing, and modifying treatment plans

* Prevention of injury and disability, and promotion and maintenance of fitness, health and general well-being of the individual

* Participation in consultation, education and research

Physical therapy has gained significant recognition in the realm of medical treatment and rehabilitation. Throughout the course of time, various types of physical therapy techniques for various medical conditions have also emerged. As the medical field is constantly progressing, physical therapy has also evolved from its simplest traditional meaning to its current far-reaching scope.

Traditional physical therapy techniques

The traditional physical therapy technique employs the conventional techniques that are based on the proper evaluation of movement and the physical causes of pain. It takes into consideration the physical aspects of a certain medical condition, as well as the methods of alleviating its associated symptoms using techniques that are geared to promote the general physical well-being of the patient.

Physical therapy started to be known as a distinctive profession during World War I. A division was opened by the Surgeon General's Office to provide rehabilitation to wounded soldiers. The said division created the so-called 'Reconstruction Aides', who would later be called Physical Therapists. The profession started to grow until the 1940's and 1950's polio epidemics. Traditional physical therapy techniques prevalent before were instrumental in helping a lot of polio victims in reducing the paralyzing effects of this disease.

Innovative physical therapy techniques

The modern physical therapy techniques are different from traditional techniques in such a way that it goes beyond the mere physical aspect of the disease and the physical well-being of the individual. Innovative physical therapy techniques are tailored to promote not only alleviation of physical symptoms, but also the mental and emotional health of the patient.

Most of these innovative physical therapy techniques adopt a treatment plan that incorporates the traditional or conventional physical therapy techniques with the advanced techniques. The advanced physical therapy techniques make use of the various technological innovations in the management of a patient's condition. These techniques are designed to specifically target each patient's needs. The physical aspect of the program aims to correct mechanical stress and minimize muscle and joint strains.

The mental/emotional aspect on the other hand is targeted to help promote the patient's coping mechanism and maximize his participation in his therapy.

Advanced physical therapy therefore effectively incorporates patient awareness-based stress management techniques tailored to soothe both the body and the mind, to the traditional physical therapy techniques.
